Djalma Miler Chaves, PhD.

Forestry Advisor
at Lacan Florestal 

Djalma has been advising Lacan since 2012 on matters such as soil nutrition and fertilization. With over 50 years of academic and professional experince, Djalma has worked as a Manager in the soil division of Jari Celulose in the 70s. After that, between 1979 and 1987, he was in charge of the department of research and silviculture of Rigesa-Westvaco, now part of WestRock. Between 1988 and 2000, he was Forestry Manager and Director of Manville-Igaras. During this period, he was in charge of land acquisition, forest planting (both pine and eucalyptus), forest management, harvest and wood supply to the company’s mill. When Manville-Igaras was acquired by Klabin, Djalma became a full-time consultant for pine and eucalyptus management in the southern states of Brazil, as well as São Paulo and Bahia.

 

Besides advising Lacan, he still collaborates with other companies especially in the field of soil nutrition and is involved in academic activities with the University of Santa Catarina.

Djalma holds a Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Engineering from the Amazon Agricultural School and a Master’s and PhD degree in soil sciences, fertilization and nutrition from the University of Maine at Orono Maine.
